Brilliant Darkness Book

The Brilliant Darkness is a book written by Celia Taylor-Weir, a mine tour guide at Honister Slate Mine and mother of the late Mark Weir who saved England's last working slate mine from extinction in the mid-1990s through sheer determination. The book is an account by Celia of Mark's set-backs and successes as he battled the authorities to make a go of a business and industry which was on its knees in a remote corner of the Lake District. Accompanying the book is the DVD "A Privilege To Walk," an in-depth documentary about Honister which features extensive interviews with Mark telling his story, the miners of old and working life in the rural Lake District valley of Borrowdale. Both are a must if you love Honister, the Lakes or ever met Mark Weir who was tragically killed in a helicopter accident at the mine on March 8th, 2011.
