About Honister Slate Mine
We are a family-run firm keeping England’s last working slate mine alive in the heart of the Lake District.
Our business is at the top of Honister Pass - one of the steepest roads in the country where we source our slate from deep inside a neighbouring mountain, Fleetwith Pike.
Formerly the Buttermere and Westmorland Green Slate Company Ltd, its owners today are the Weir-Wilkinson family.
Slate has been mined here at Honister Slate Mine for centuries…from occupying Romans to ancient Monks and Victorian pioneers.
Working 11 miles of underground tunnels, we preserve an expertise and appreciation for Honister Green Slate, using ancient techniques to make truly unique contemporary products.
